I'm not sure if that was connected to Otsutsuki genjutsu, but I still think it's possible that Boruto could go to the past as their way of flashbacks and Boruto learning about Naruto and Sasuke. I got feeling that's what the artifact will do in combination with the fisherman playing arounds rinne-sharingan.
